I also would have liked Cecil making it out of the pocket universe. In terms of story, though, he was there to die an show us more of how Walter is changing.
I’ve seen speculation that the child might actually turn into September. That would be an interesting twist. We still need to wait for the radio to make some noise which will undoubtedly lead us to the child just when we need him.
